What is a TechNeed?

A TechNeed is an anonymous listing that seeks a technology. While our Founding Sponsors alone have access to about a quarter of the world´s R&D, not all of it currently appears on yet2.com. Even so, much of that R&D (and more) would be available for sale or license if only our member organizations knew that someone was looking for it.

A TechNeed, then, is a way for you to "put out feelers" for the technology, know-how, expertise, and other information you need without announcing to the world who you are and what you are working on.

yet2.com is very cognizant of the sensitive nature of TechNeeds, and we´ll want to work with you closely to make sure that your need is answered with the best available solution we can find.

We also know that your needs are timely, which is why we ask for a timeframe for your search.

Create a New TechNeed of Your Own

This on-line form lists the information that yet2.com requires to help you fill your TechNeed.

Title (required)

Your title should state your need clearly:

Method for decalcifying tap water

or...

Rocket fuel and oxidizer with a specific impulse of...

(Rather than water conditioner or fuel.)

Timeframe (required)

Choose the approximate number of months -- 3, 6, 12, 24 -- you´re allowing for your search.

Description (required)

It´s always difficult to state the technology you need, because a technology developed in an industry completely different from yours might be the solution you are looking for. Who knew that a laundry detergent could be developed into a contact lens cleaner or a down-hole hard-rock drill lubricant? In your description of the technology, try to concentrate on the operating parameters under which the technology will have to function, as well as its purpose.

For example:

Lubricant for hinge mechanism, able to withstand hard vacuum.

A simple oil-based lubricant might seize in space. Maybe a solid lubricant is in order? Without potential solution providers knowing that it must be "able to withstand hard vacuum" you could receive many replies with inappropriate technologies. And anyway (ahem) who says that hard vacuum can exist only in outer space...?

Desired Outcome (required)

What does the technology bring to you, and how do you want people to think of the solutions they offer you? Composites technology may contribute less weight to aircraft wing structures, windsurf boards, automobile bodies, skis, or house roofing... Thus allowing the same size roof truss system to withstand the weight of solar heating equipment, and reducing overall building costs -- but is your goal reducing weight or reducing costs? One solution might be lighter roofing (cost variable); another solution might be cheaper roofing (weight variable). Which do you want? Or do you want both?

A new silicon dopant may increase chip yield. Or, it may reduce capital spending that might otherwise go to new plant and equipment.

How you describe the desired outcome of the technology will -- in part -- determine how people with potential solutions view what they have to offer you. Weight reduction or cost reduction? Increased chip yield or reduced capital expenditure? The Desired Outcome field positions the possibilities in the mind of the people who can offer the solutions.

Field of Use/Intended Application (required)

How are you going to apply this technology? A detergent company may be happy to supply a new drilling lubricant, but be unwilling to supply a technology to another detergent company. On the other hand, we know of at least one consumer goods company that supplied a technology to a direct competitor (now they get revenues from their competitor´s success).

Every supplying company will have agreements in place that they must honor that will control whether they can supply a solution for your use. How you intend to apply the technology is an important field to produce the solutions you seek.

Recommend some categories for your TechNeed

Categories are important! They help searchers find your technology need -- even when searchers don't know precisely what they are looking for, and they help yet2.com promote your technology need appropriately. Think about categories outside the normal application of the technology need: radar for machine tool alignment or color-changing paint to measure airflow. Recommendations here are provisional; yet2.com makes the final selection.

Previously Attempted Solutions (optional)

You need not describe your solutions in detail, however, knowing what you´ve tried already will help yet2.com and its members avoid offering you the potential solutions you´ve already discarded.

Other Comments (optional)

Use this field to add comment that may help yet2.com and its members in identifying the solution that would best meet your needs.

Keywords (optional)

yet2.com automatically indexes the words in the information you supply in your TechNeed form. People who search TechNeeds search against this list of words. The Keywords field allows you to add search words that may not already appear in your TechNeed, thus increasing the chances that your TechNeed for wing surface, for example, may turn up in a search for airfoil -- a word that might not otherwise appear in the text.

Restrictions (optional)

In this field, you can list the organizations, regions, industries, and so forth, from which you will not accept a response. yet2.com does not disclose the contents of this field to searchers. However -- and considering the example of the company that licensed to its competitor -- you may wish to think about restrictions as carefully as you do about the technology description.

Company Reference Number (optional)

Enter your own reference number here, if you want to add one. yet2.com automatically assigns each TechNeed its own unique identifier.

Company Demographics

The Company Demographics are the only company information that can be included with a TechNeed. They are under the control of your group Administrator.
