TechPak:
A Display Designed to Convey Information -- Not Hide It

See Also:

TechPak Form

With almost a year of analysis and consultation behind it, the TechPak display focuses on answering as many of the pre-licensing questions as is possible before the actual start of negotiations. This section provides a tour of the display.

Some of the fields of the display are summaries generated automatically and extracted from various fields of the TechPak form. Knowing how it all appears to the prospective licensor is a good place to start understanding the nature and advantages of the TechPak format.

Overview

Technology Overview page

The Technology Overview page provides a summary of the most salient points about the technology. It includes an abstract, along with summaries compiled automatically from the Application Benefits, Development Status, and Intellectual Property sections.

There is room for an illustration and optionally for the logo of the technology provider (technology providers can still remain anonymous).

Note the menu system at left, and the list of actions that you can take. For example, you can immediately ask for an introduction, if this information is enough for you; or you can ask for an introduction at any time while reading the TechPak material, and from any page. You can also ask a question of the provider, email a link to the TechPak to a friend or colleague, or print the information in a printer-friendly fashion.

Novelty

Explanation of the technology benefits and uniqueness

The Novelty page describes the benefits of the technology -- for example, its application benefits, production benefits, and potential economic benefits to the prospective licensor or to the eventual end users.

Technology Differentiation and Uniqueness is an opportunity for the technology provider to explain in a straightforward way how this technology is different from any similar technology (or that there is no similar technology). Were an organization to license this technology, what advantages do they gain in terms of protectability, manufacturing techniques or know-how, and other barriers to entry?

Development

Development status and potential applications

The Development page explains the technology´s current state. For example, is it in the concept stage, has it been prototyped, is development further advanced, or is it already in a state of commercialization?

yet2.com encourages technology providers to summarize the development status of their technologies.

The Application and Potential Advantage section offers a chance for the technology provider to list possible applications and their business advantage to the licensor. A relatively long list of potential applications shows that there is a lot of unutilized life in a technology -- that the technology provider knows of several business or scientific areas where the technology can be applied, but which have not yet been tapped. Similarly, perhaps there is a list of currently developed and fully operational application areas that the technology provider is willing to sell or license.

In either case, this is the area that prospective licensors turn to, to discover how much thought the technology provider has devoted to the present and future of the technology.

Intellectual Property

Patent disclosures

This section lists the patents that pertain to the technology. A prospective licensor can click a patent to read it.

Provider Demographics

Information about the technology provider

The Provider Demographics page lets a prospective licensor learn about the technology provider. Remember that revealing the identity of the technology provider is optional; nevertheless, it´s good to know what type of organization you´re dealing with, even if you don´t yet know who they are.

The company logo and company information come from the company´s own Administrator, who can choose to reveal this information on a technology-by-technology basis.

Related Competency is an opportunity for the author of the TechPak to describe the experience that the organization may have had with similar technologies or similar businesses -- or similar successes -- over the years.

The yet2.com administrator enters the information in the Provider Transaction Status. As yet2.com´s experience guiding introductions has grown, our information about the ease and professionalism of various organizations´ licensing practices has likewise grown.

Company Demographics appear if the company itself is unidentified. They derive from the company demographics entered by the company´s administrator.

Technical Details

Long description and frequently asked questions

Technical Details includes a Long Description of the technology, Frequently Asked Questions, and a list of attachments (files such as videos, PDFs and so forth).

The Long Description can be as long and as detailed as needed to adequately describe the technology. Technology providers can embed illustrations, animated GIFs, indeed any embedded object supported by Word.

Frequently Asked Questions provide an opportunity to list -- and dispose of -- common questions that have come up during the initial stages of negotiations in the past, or that can be anticipated for this technology in the future. Prospective licensors who read the questions and their answers will be better prospects when they do ask for an introduction.

Attachments are files uploaded to yet2.com separately from the TechPak form, but associated with it. Often videos, blueprints, documents in PDF format, or other attachments can help explain the technology even more fully.

Licensing

Licensing, collaboration, terms, restrictions, support

The Licensing page gives a prospective licensor an insight into the heart of the deal. It includes the description by the technology provider of the type of deal the provider is interested in making. For example, is the technology for sale or license? Would a license be exclusive or non-exclusive? Are there geographical restrictions on the licensing? Export restrictions? What kind of support does the technology provider supply? Training? Consultation?
