Q: What sources of graphics can you recommend for use in my TechPaks?Q: How does the Technology Marketplace work?
A: yet2.com fosters the connection between technology needs and capabilities. We do this in several ways -- one primary way is by maintaining our online marketplace of technology for license, available know-how, and technology needs. But yet2.com is much more than a just the Technology Marketplace. We provide consultative services around assessing your portfolio of intellectual property to help you select which technologies are best suited to out-licensing. We help you identify your organization´s technology needs -- and we help find the answers to those needs. We help you prepare your technologies for market, and we assist you through the deal-making process. Our web site and our access to a large fraction of the world´s R&D make up the engine that powers our products and services.
You can market your technologies here to organizations around the globe. You can confidentially seek solutions to your technology needs (not everyone wants to reinvent the wheel) -- and we can help every step along the way.
Q: Who can use this site?
A: Use of yet2.com Technology Marketplace is open to everyone. We have registered users from every continent (at last count, two users were located in Antarctica), every industry, every type of organization, and every job function involved in technology. People use our service to keep abreast of relevant developments, identify technical answers to their needs, create product improvements, and start new business ventures. Whether you're an engineer, inventor, or scientist; an intellectual asset manager, licensing professional, or general manager; a broker, consultant, or patent lawyer; a CEO, CTO, or CFO -- yet2.com has something to offer you.
Q: Why do I need to register?
A: When you register and log in, we´re able to deliver more customized services to you. For example, you can save searches and have us notify you when new listings meet your needs. Or you can customize your home page so that you see recently added technologies in your areas of interest. Registration gives you access to a wide range of information and services.
Registration is free. There are fees to become a group account (so that people in your organization can use the site), and to post TechPaks and TechNeeds (although these are often included in group membership fees). Please contact your yet2.com representative for details at sales@yet2.com.
Q: How is the yet2.com Technology Marketplace different from other Internet sites that deal with technology transfer?
A: Finding a buyer for your technology, or finding a technology for you to buy, is only a small part of what we do. The Technology Marketplace is a center point for a robust offering of services and other products built around the practice of technology transfer; it´s not just a web site. We provide consultative services around assessing your portfolio of intellectual property and helping you select which technologies are best suited to out-licensing. We help you identify your organization´s technology needs -- and we help find the answers and solutions to those needs. We help you prepare your technologies for market, and we assist you through the deal-making process.
With the Technology Marketplace as its engine, yet2.com offers other products for organizations that need an internal technology exchange or that want to offer their own technologies on their own web sites.
The Technology Marketplace itself is unique. It provides:
- Global representation with roughly a third of our user visits and technologies from outside the U.S.
- Unparalleled access to many of the world´s largest R&D powerhouses
- Cross-industry connections through a unique database focused on the applications and benefits of individual technologies
- Security that your search information will remain confidential and won't be shared with a corporate parent
- Anonymity in listing your technology if you so choose
- Flexibility to accommodate unique deals by having a process that leads to in-person discussions rather than to an auction
Q: Who are some of your technology providers?
A: Our technology providers are many of the most respected names in technology and intellectual property. They represent the diversity of the world´s technology, encompassing many industries, technical specialties, and geographies. Many have agreed to help us build this marketplace, providing exclusive rights to market much of their technology on the Internet, helping us promote the market in their industries, and lending us their insights into how to make it more useful.
And just by themselves, our technology providers represent about a quarter of the world´s R&D.
You can see some of them at: yet2.com Technology Providers.
Q: So, is yet2.com just for large corporations?
A: No, most of our current introductions are between large and small companies. Small companies have found useful technologies that help them meet a market need not large enough for the large corporation. And large companies have found brilliant ideas from smaller companies that don't have the resources to commercialize them effectively.
Q: Why do I need this service?
A: The yet2.com Technology Marketplace is only part of a structure of consulting services and products that yet2.com offers. It´s the central engine that drives the rest of the structure; so it´s important to understand how it works and what the entire methodology offers.
yet2.com can help you identify technologies appropriate for your organization to out-license, and we can help you identify technology needs that may be candidates for in-licensing -- sometimes from another part of your own organization! We help you prepare those technologies and needs for the yet2.com Technology Marketplace, and we work to produce introductions for you. After an introduction occurs, we help with valuation, negotiation, and other similar services leading to the conclusion of a licensing deal.
yet2.com will help both technology owners seeking to increase returns on under-utilized intellectual assets and companies seeking to acquire some of the world's most exciting innovations to help their businesses. We can put your technologies in front of more people faster, increasing your chances of finding a qualified buyer as well as facilitating your introduction.
If you're a searcher with technology needs, we give you access to a database of some of the world´s most exciting licensable technologies, and we can help in finding what might not yet be in the database. For both parties, we dramatically reduce the normally lengthy process of assessing which technologies are appropriate for the organization to out-license or in-license, the discovery of those technologies, and the conclusion of a licensing deal.
Q: Why pay to use your service when I already have access to online patent databases?
A: Well, simply put, we're not an online patent database.
First, because patent abstracts are designed to protect an idea from infringement, they actually can obscure the technology, making it difficult for potential buyers to imagine relevant applications. Conversely, yet2.com features functional abstracts written in plain English to communicate the potential applications and benefits of the technology.
Second, yet2.com technologies are groups of patents, know-how, or other information that are already pre-screened and packaged by the owner for license. Every technology in yet2.com is available for license -- as opposed to a fraction of all patents -- saving you from pursuing dead-end leads.
Q: How big is your database?
A: Our technology providers alone represent about a quarter of the world´s R&D, and we're growing rapidly. If you don't find what you're looking for today, you can save your search and let us notify you when we get a listing that meets your criteria. You can also create a TechNeed -- an anonymous statement about the kind of technology you´re looking for. Our unprecedented access to R&D powerhouses means that we may be able to help you find an answer to your TechNeed even if that answer does not currently appear in our database.
Q: What can I do for free?
A: Anyone can use our search tools and view the search results for free and without registering. Unregistered users can also see the Tech of the Week articles -- including their corresponding TechPaks -- and can read other articles we have published. To view the detailed information from TechPaks in general, we require you to register with us, either as a member of a group account or as a personal account holder in your own right. In either case, there is no fee for viewing TechPaks; see Q: Why do I need to register?
yet2.com does charge to post TechPaks and TechNeeds. Your membership may include some number of TechPaks and TechNeeds. Please contact sales@yet2.com for more information about account plans and fees.
Selling Technology:
Q: Is it safe?
A: We have an obligation to protect the usage information of anyone who lists or searches for technology on our site. However, technology descriptions listed in our database become part of the public domain. Only you can determine what you are willing to disclose to the public about your technology.
Q: Who can list?
A: Any organization or individual who owns technology may post that technology on our site. Any organization or individual looking for a technologic solution to their problem can post a TechNeed. In addition, brokers who have exclusive rights to market a technology may also list. In order to list a technology or need on our site, we must authorize your organization to list and you must have the authority to trade intellectual property for your organization. Authorization requires us to obtain some additional information, such as identification numbers and references.
Q: If my competition is listing here, can I list here too?
A: Yes, in fact, we believe you'll benefit from the fact that more people from the same industry are listing technology relevant to people with similar needs. If a competitor makes an inquiry regarding one of the technologies or needs you've listed with us, you can choose to decline the introduction if you wish. (Although in at least one case, a technology provider has chosen to license a technology to a competitor.)
Q: What does it cost?
A: We have several plans that are designed to meet the needs of different sizes of organizations. They range from plans for individuals listing technologies one at a time on a personal account to unlimited annual listing memberships. Please contact your local yet2.com sales representative in the U.S., Europe, or Asia to determine the account that is right for you.
Q: What's my commitment?
A: Since we're working hard to gain exposure for your technology through the Technology Marketplace and through syndication to other search sites, we ask that if you list a technology with us, you commit to:
- keep it on our site for one year, and
- not list it with other third party Internet sites during that time.
- list the same technology with brokers or sell it on your own or
- use other sites for other technologies.
Q: How does yet2.com generate revenue?
A: We charge a commission for technology transfer arrangements executed by way of introduction from our site, with a $5000 minimum. As a result, you only pay our commission when you've received value from using our service. Your yet2.com representative can explain our commission structure.
Technical FAQs
Q: I forgot my user name/password.
A: Please email us at login@yet2.com, and we will send you your user name. Using your user name, log in to the site, and then click Email my password to me on the Login page; we´ll then email a new password to you. We recommend that you log in using that new password, and then change it to something you´ll find easy to remember.
Q: How do I join a group account (my company's account) if I already have a membership?
A: You can join an account by logging in with your current user name and password, then click my profile in the navigation bar near the top of the page. Click the Group Membership link on the left side of the screen. Enter the group code in the box (or if you don't have the group code click the link "request the group code here"), check "Check here to confirm that you are changing your group membership," and then click Submit. Your account, with the existing user name and password, will then be joined to the new group account and you will be able to utilize all services associated with that account.
Q: Please explain the fee structure to the Technology Marketplace.
A: Registration, reading Tech of the Week and other articles, searching for technologies, searching TechNeeds, searching patents, and viewing the abstracts returned by a search are all free services. To view the details of listings, to ask a question, or to ask for an introduction, we require you to be registered and logged in -- but those services are also free once you have done so.
yet2.com charges to list TechPaks and TechNeeds, and charges a commission on licensing deals. Your membership may include one or more listings. Please contact sales@yet2.com for more information about account plans and fees.
Q: I am having trouble accessing TechPaks.
A: Members can have trouble accessing TechPaks for a number of reasons. For example, if you have recently uploaded a TechPak, there can be a short delay between the uploading and having the TechPak visible, while the system imports the text, graphics, and attachments.
Please make sure that you are registered by clicking my profile in the navigation bar near the top of any page and looking for the Finish Registration link on the left hand side of that screen. If you can see this link, click it and finish the registration process.
Other problems can occur when trying to view your organization´s own TechPaks that are still drafts and to which you do not have access. For group accounts, if you do not have Administrator privileges, you will only be able to see your own draft TechPaks; not anyone else´s. If you are an Administrator, make sure that the TechPaks in question have been submitted to you by the author; even an Administrator cannot view TechPaks written by others and which are still drafts. For any further questions, please contact us at info@yet2.com.
Q: I clicked on a link to download your TechPak form (or a PDF document), and IE attempts to save it as an HTML file. That can´t be right!
A: An acknowledged bug in IE 5.5 with Service Pack 1 causes this problem; other versions of IE apparently do not suffer from the bug. There are two work-arounds: Method 1. When you click a button or link, the Save or Open dialog appears. Click Open (rather than Save to Disk). You´ll see the Save or Open dialog again. This time, click Save to Disk. Method 2 (works only with links, not buttons). Shift-click the link to download. IE may open a second window and present the Save or Open dialog box again, or both. Click Save to Disk on the second dialog box.
Q: I can´t seem to download your TechPak form (or other file) through our corporate firewall. The file may not arrive, it may be quarantined, or it never reaches me for some other reason.
A: Please contact yet2.com Customer Support at helpsupport@yet2.com. Some firewall systems are reluctant to pass files that contain macros, such as the TechPak form.
Q: I have completed the registration, yet I receive messages saying that I haven't.
A: If you receive this message, our records show that your registration to our site was incomplete. This could happen for several reasons:
- Your registration really was left unfinished. If this is the case, please log in to the My yet2.com page and click my profile in the navigation bar near the top of the page. Then click Finish Registration on the left side of that page and finish the registration process.
- You became a member and started registration to join a group account or establish a personal account, but your session was terminated or timed out before you completed the registration process. (Maybe you were interrupted and left the computer.) Please log in to the site, click my profile in the navigation bar near the top of the page. Then click Finish Registration on the left side of that page and finish the registration process.
Q: If I only want to list one technology, can I just pay for that, rather than getting a membership?
A: The free memberships include searching, but do not include listing your technologies. Listing authorization and the TechPak approval process are included with the paid memberships; our listing authorization process assures searchers that your organization actively does business where and how you have stated. Please contact yet2.com´s Sales staff for your options.
Q: How do I unsubscribe or cancel my account?
A: We will delete your group or personal account at your request. Simply send an email to accounts@yet2.com; we will archive your account, and confirm with you when the process is complete.
If all you want to do is leave a group account you have joined as a member, please contact your organization´s group Administrator to delete you. yet2.com will convert you to a personal account.
Q: What's the delay with my TechPak or TechNeed appearing on the site?
A: After uploading your TechPak, there is a brief delay while the site processes the document, its graphics, and any attachments before it can appear on your Drafts tab. While this usually takes only seconds, it can take up to several minutes, depending on site traffic. If you have submitted a TechPak or TechNeed to the yet2.com administrator, this review for completeness can take additional time because a human looks over your material. yet2.com can send you an email when your listing is live on the Technology Marketplace (click the check box when you submit your listing).
There can be other reasons for delay. For example, your account may need to be authorized before we can bring any TechPaks or TechNeeds live on the yet2.com Technology Marketplace, even though you have submitted them to the yet2.com administrator.
- For organizations, we ask that:
- You provide the contact information of your CEO, the Federal Employers Identification Number (FEIN), and any state (or country) registration number.
- The CEO is contacted to verify individual authority to conduct business for the company.
- The FEIN and state number are validated, usually with the Secretary of State in the state they are incorporated.
- Individuals need to provide a Doing Business As (DBA) name if they have one, or the name and contact information of a professional society of which they are a member.
Q: I type the title of my TechPak into a search, but yet2.com does not find my TechPak. I know it´s in there!
A: The yet2.com search engine filters out "noise" words (such as the, and, a, and others). If the title contains such a noise word, your search may return something unexpected.
Important: To search for a specific phrase, type the phrase.
See Search Problem-Solver and the other search pages for a complete explanation of the way to get the most from the yet2.com search engine.
Q: What sources of graphics can you recommend for use in my TechPaks?
A: The TechPak format encourages you to use graphics to help explain your technology. Often, this can be difficult because you´re dealing with a "product" that may not actually be a product yet -- if it were a new car, you could simply take a photograph of it.
- Diagrams: Patent diagrams can work, but the lines on patent diagrams can be thin and don´t reproduce well on a computer screen. Also, the legends that appear on such diagrams can be illegible on screen. A better choice is to pick the best of such diagrams, and have a graphic artist render them using Adobe Illustrator or similar tool, and then create a PDF file from that to use as an attachment. If you want to embed a graphic in your TechPak, GIFs work best for drawings and diagrams; JPEGs work best for photographs. You can always attach files for complex diagrams or a series of photographs that may not fit well on the typical TechPak page. You can attach other types of files -- for example, files from Visio, AutoCAD, Illustrator, or similar packages -- but not all readers of your TechPak may have those software packages available to them, have the most recent versions, or be viewing your TechPak on the same type of system on which you created the files (Windows platform versus Macintosh, UNIX, or Linux, for example).
- Photographs: A good-quality digital photograph (JPEG) can show machinery in the field, a factory installation, lab bench lash-up, or the effects of a test.
- Animated GIF: An animated GIF can show a brief demo without incurring the download overhead of an MPEG file or streaming video. Animated GIFs may require special software to create.
- MPEG file, .AVI file, RealMedia file: You can attach a short movie to your TechPak. Movies may require special software to create. Bear in mind that users will have to download most movies.
If you have any questions about graphics, be sure to contact Customer Support at helpsupport@yet2.com.
