The “Imperfection Detection: Detect Me If You Canprize challenge just launched through yet2’s partner, HeroX. The competition is sponsored by the Bureau of Reclamation.

In a project for the Bureau of Reclamation last year, yet2 surveyed recent developments in non-destructive inspection of fiber reinforced polymer components and looked for gaps that could be addressed by a competition. It was clear that many new technologies were becoming commercially available and that there could be a significant benefit to supporting companies as they advance the state of the art.

Earlier this month, the Imperfection Detection prize challenge opened with the goal of developing portable tools that use non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods to assess the condition of existing FRP composite structures.

In the first phase, which has a deadline of June 24, 2021, there will be up to five winners of $60,000 to support development of a prototype and the opportunity to move to later phases. The winner of the competition will win $50,000.

We’re very excited to see that the project has turned into an active challenge and can’t wait to see the results. The winner is projected to be announced in December 2022.
