The United States Department of Energy’s Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO), alongside the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), have announced the InDEEP challenge. The prize looks for distributed embedded energy converter technologies (DEEC-Tec) that can leverage non-force concentrating materials to transform energy from ocean waves into usable electricity.

DEEC-Tec is the combination of many small energy converters, often less than a few centimetres in size, into a single structure which allows the harvesting of a broader range of ocean wave energy. The InDEEP challenge is seeking any technology which may contribute to this goal, whether previously used in wave energy conversion or not.

If you are innovating in this space contact us or apply here!

Applicants of the prize challenge will be given the opportunity to win prize awards (up to $2.3 million), access to multiple support mechanisms, and collaboration opportunities with experts in other technology areas to develop innovative distributed embedded energy converters.

The prize is looking for competitors with experience in technologies that can contribute to distributed embedded energy converters, including (but not limited to):

  • Soft Robotics
  • Electro-active Polymers
  • Printed Flexible Objects
  • Distributed Pumps / Actuators
  • Distributed Belts
  • Bio-inspired Designs
  • Piezoelectric
  • Origami Mechanics
  • Meta Materials
  • Micro-manufacturing
  • Rubber / Tires
  • Energy Conversion via Metal Nanolayers
  • Micro-electro Mechanicals (MEMs)
  • Inflatables
  • Compliant Mechanical Manipulators
  • Polymers
  • Elastomer
