Overview:
This organization, a global consumer healthcare company, is seeking methods or technologies to extend the duration of the cooling sensation of topical gels and/or creams.
Background:
Cooling agents such as menthol are a key active ingredient in topical formulations (i.e., gels, creams) that locally deliver a cooling sensation to the skin along with pain relief. In gel and cream formulations, the provided cooling effect usually fades within 1 hour. To address this issue, this organization is interested in exploring technologies to manipulate the release of cooling agents or otherwise prevent the attenuation of the cooling sensation.
Key Criteria:
- Be usable in gel or cream skin topical formats; other formats of secondary interest
- Minimum 2 hours cooling sensation
- Eligible for OTC
- Safe for daily use
- Safety data/Skin irritation data available
Constraints:
Solutions should NOT:
- Require an additional device
- Require two separate topical delivery systems
Possible Solution Areas:
This client is open to a range of solutions including but not limited to:
- Encapsulation technologies
- Film-forming technologies for sustained release
- Alternative skin coolants/Menthol derivatives
- Additives (i.e., hydration for enhanced delivery)
Desired outcome of the solution:
Identify solution providers with technologies to extend the duration of cooling skin topicals and evaluate solutions for partnership.
