Overview:
yet2’s client is seeking innovative AI technologies capable of automated identification and categorization of general waste and recyclables from a variety of office, retail and hotel operations. This data will be used to understand the composition of tenant waste and design strategies for waste reduction, including more targeted ways to engage tenants and enhance waste management infrastructure.
Background:
A leading commercial property developer and operator in Hong Kong and mainland China, currently completes regular waste audits to assess their tenants’ waste separation and provide recommendations to improve volume of recycling and divert waste from landfill. These audits are labour-intensive, high cost, and have a significant time lag between data collection and report completion, rendering them inefficient. Space and time constraints also limit the sample size of each audit, thereby impacting the number of tenants and the volume of waste that can be included in each audit.
Key Success Criteria:
Seeking AI technologies, such as Visual AI, that can collect timely, accurate information about business tenants’ waste separation behavior to remain strategic in waste reduction efforts.
- Ability to provide reasonable and timely analysis of tenants’ general waste composition with minimal human effort, where possible
- Easy-to-implement and scalable technology
- Ability to be readily adapted to differing global waste and recyclable categorization and legislation, with focus on existing capabilities/case studies in Hong Kong and mainland China
- Ability to provide reporting and analysis platform/dashboard with actionable insights
Solutions not of interest:
- Smart bin solutions
- Robotic solutions for waste sorting
Desired outcome of the solution:
Partner with a technology provider to achieve waste reduction in weight and improve waste diversion rates amongst tenants. The ability to test/trial a solution before implementation would be of high interest. The client is open to engaging with startups, research institutions, or commercial solution providers.
