Overview:
A yet2 client is seeking point-of-care or at-home testing methods and platforms with a digital element for screening and diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and relevant cardio-renal-metabolic diseases. Ideal solutions will facilitate the early detection for people at risk of these diseases.
Background:
Traditional CKD testing includes estimated glomerular filtration rate, serum creatinine, and albumin-to-creatinine ratio. There is a gap in screening and diagnosis according to guidelines. There are several reasons, including a general lack of symptoms at early CKD stages and limited healthcare provider and patient awareness of the long term cardiorenal implications of CKD as well as restricted access to laboratory services in some areas/populations.
This testing protocol is limited in terms of:
- Missed cases/silent progression: when diagnostic tests must be ordered by a healthcare provider, only symptomatic patients will be tested–while CKD is often asymptomatic until its late stages
- Follow-up testing: some CKD diagnostic criteria require follow-up testing to confirm chronicity, which can result in non-compliance
- Timeline: healthcare providers and patients must wait for results, delaying discussion and treatment decisions New options for rapid in-office testing at point-of-care or at-home testing can overcome some of these limitations, allowing for faster results and broader test access.
Features of an ideal solution:
- Tests will be paired with a digital component (e.g. app or device) and/or are able to integrate into existing digital workflows (e.g. capability for results to be communicated back to the provider)
- Tests must currently or have the capability to screen and/or diagnose chronic kidney diseases
- Point-of-care tests will provide results within the window of an appointment
- At-home tests can deliver results without need for physical referral to laboratory services
- Development level: ideal solutions will be commercially available in the US market and CLIA waived/certified
Desired outcome of the solution: potential to pilot a platform solution with our client.
