Seeking: Solutions to Extend the Lifetime of Single-Use Filters in the Presence of Liquid

Share

Overview:

A yet2 client is seeking design or material solutions to prevent clogging of a single-use gas permeable filter, which must allow gas to pass through while effectively containing liquids of varying viscosities in a small, moving reservoir.

Background:

For the target application, gases and liquids of varying viscosities are collected in a portable, flexible receptable with an integrated filter to release accumulated gas build-up. During extended use, the liquid medium is occasionally in contact with the filter causing it to clog or block; this subsequently causes pressure to build up which can lead to leakage and higher rates of replacement. This project aims to investigate technologies or design solutions which can prevent clogging and extend the lifetime of the single-use filter.

Requirements:

A wide range of solutions will be considered including minor and radical modifications. However, due to the filter being disposable, any solution should be:

  • Non-toxic
  • Portable
  • Cost-effective for mass production
  • Able to operate for up to 72 hours, filtering up to 5 Liters of gas

Possible Solution Areas:

  • Alternative materials more resistant to clogging
  • Filter cleaning/replacement mechanisms
  • Coatings
  • Physical design solutions to prevent liquid reaching and clogging the filter

Desired outcome of the solution:

Looking for partners to develop a filter technology to a level that makes it integrable into the single-use products.
