Underarm and Body Sprays are a growing form across the globe, and particularly in North America (NA) where it has grown ~30% over the past 3 years.
Sprays offer a unique “non-contact” application and skin feel experience that some consumers prefer. They also offer the delivery of ingredients to wider surface areas (e.g. delivery of fragrance via Body Sprays). Traditionally sprays have used hydrocarbon-based propellants for ideal spray performance – pressure generated by propellant enables break-up of liquid formulation (often dispersed with powders/clays) into a fine, sprayable mist.
Over time, the safety and environmental landscape (especially in NA) has evolved, with regulations driving up the cost of packaging, filling/packing, transportation and storage of propellants. The consumer landscape is also evolving, with more consumers seeking solutions that are perceived as safer (e.g. Aluminum-free) and more environmentally-responsible (e.g. non-aerosol products).
These new demands bring difficult technical challenges and/or trade-offs to resolve. For example:
- Anti-perspirancy/wetness-reduction without Aluminum-based actives
- Dry-feel application aesthetics from a non-propellant delivery mechanism
- Dosing/control challenges (especially w/ pump sprays or non-hydrocarbon propellants
We Are Looking For
An AP/DO spray innovation (ideally non-hydrocarbon propellent) to improve the superiority and consumer delight of P&G’s Sprays line-up across the globe (specific focus on NA market/compliance). We are interested in both Package – to provide functional performance enablement of product performance breakthroughs – and Formula – irresistible consumer experience/delight, noticeable performance superiority, “no-no” ingredients (Aluminum, VOCs/CFCs, etc.) innovation, and ideally complete product/package and manufacturing solutions (via contract manufacturer) that can be launched into the market in the next 12-24 months.

The ideal product innovation/solution would provide a point of differentiation and/or competitive advantage vs. currently marketed products. Possible points of difference could be one or more of the below:
- Non-aerosol / Hydrocarbon-Free or Propellant-free (e.g. compressed gas, N2, pump spray)
- New delivery mechanisms
- Sustainable Solutions (e.g. Refillable)
- Customization (e.g. adjustable scent/ingredient level)
- Total body dry sprays and/or deodorant sprays (benefits or body areas outside the underarm)
- Aluminum-Free w/ consumer-perceived wetness/odor protection
- Aluminum-based Antiperspirant Sprays that resolve known tradeoffs (see above)
The Ideal proposal Would Also Be
- Compliant w/ current and anticipated US (all States) and Canada regulations through 2030 (specifically CARB, including e-commerce). Regional Solutions also desired (compliant in most/all global markets)
- Holistically Designed: Product, Package & Manufacturing solution
- Attractive business/cost proposition: Material, Capital & Manufacturing costs/investments that enable long-term profitability
We Are NOT Interested In
- Industry-standard, commodity or common in-market solutions (products that do not resolve major tradeoffs of non-aerosol and/or Al-free products today). New Raw Materials or Active ingredients only
- Premium/expensive powered/electrical products
- Ideas/solutions with significant remaining invention, development or lead time to commercialization
- Products that violate P&G’s Ingredient Policy or include “No-No” ingredients https://us.pg.com/ingredients/
